Sparkling wine is any wine that contains carbon dioxide which is what creates those beloved bubbles. While Champagne and Prosecco are the most recognized types, nearly every wine-producing country crafts some version of sparkling wine. From France’s rich tradition to and Italy’s lively styles, each sparkling wine reflects its local terroir, grape varieties, and winemaking techniques.

Sparkling wines are crafted using a variety of techniques from simple to labour-intensive processes like the traditional Champagne method. Each approach influences not only the wine’s flavour but also its price point. While classic Champagne is at the higher end of the spectrum, there are quality sparkling wines for every budget. Although most sparkling wines are white, there are also lovely rosé versions and even some reds. Italian producers even distinguish their wines by levels of carbonation, offering “semi-sparkling” (frizzante) and “fully sparkling” (spumante) options.

Sparkling wines aren’t just for toasts-they are among the most versatile wines when it comes to food pairings. Their lively acidity and bubbles make them perfect as an aperitif or as a companion to a wide range of dishes. So, whether it’s a festive gathering or a simple meal at home, there’s a sparkling wine ready to enhance the moment!
