Thanks to its ideal geological and climatic conditions, Tuscany is one of the most prestigious wine-growing regions in the world. The region is best known for its robust red wines, with Chianti, Vino Nobile de Montepulciano, and Brunello di Montalcino standing out as top expressions. All are crafted from the Sangiovese grape, which is arguably the most important of all Italian wine grapes. Sangiovese accounts for two-thirds of all plantings and 85% of red wine production in Tuscany.

In the late 1960s, Super Tuscans emerged, blending Sangiovese with international varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc. These wines are labeled as Toscana IGT, offering a more modern, international style compared to traditional Tuscan reds.

Though over 80% of Tuscany’s wine production is red, the region also offers some excellent white wines, with Trebbiano, Vermentino, and Vernaccia as the leading varieties. From affordable options to high-end bottles costing hundreds of dollars, Tuscany caters to all palates and price points.

While Tuscany ranks as Italy’s third most-planted wine region, it stands out for the exceptional quality of its wines, producing the third-highest volume of DOCG-certified wines, just behind Piedmont and Veneto. Whether you prefer the timeless appeal of traditional wines or the innovation of modern blends, Tuscany is a must-try region for wine lovers.
