With the rise of craft tequila producers, tequila is proving to be a versatile spirit capable of shining in a variety of exciting ways. To best enjoy tequila, it is very helpful to understand the different styles.

Blanco tequila, also known as silver, has no minimum aging requirements and rarely sees the inside of an oak barrel. For this reason, blanco often exhibits the true character of the agave plant, offering earthy and herbaceous notes of citrus, pepper, tropical fruit, and mint. These tequilas are great for making cocktails such as Palomas and Margaritas.

In the tequila world, añejo means “extra aged.” This extended time in oak results in deeper-colored tequilas with unique and complex aromas and flavors. While these tequilas can be mixed into cocktails, they are usually best enjoyed neat or over a single ice cube.

Reposado, an intermediate style between Blanco and añejo, displays the agave notes of a Blanco along with some of the oak notes associated with most añejos. These tequilas can be quite complex but are also versatile, making them suitable for both cocktails and sipping neat.

In addition to the boom in tequila products, we have recently introduced a few mezcals to our shelves. Although mezcals also come from the agave plant, they typically offer a smokier, earthier flavor compared to traditional tequilas. Whether you like to mix your tequila in a cocktail or sip it slowly from a glass, we have curated a selection of great tequilas for you to try next.
