Wines of Burgundy
April 6, 2025
With a winemaking history dating back over a thousand years, Burgundy’s diverse terroirs produce wines of remarkable complexity, elegance, and depth. This region presents a rich spectrum of flavours and styles that captivate wine lovers around the world. From the prestigious Grand Crus of Côte d’Or to the famous wines from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, some wines from this region command some of the world’s highest prices. However, we also have some more approachable, yet expressive bottles from Burgundy that offer great value such as the two examples below from Bouchard Ainé & Fils.
The chardonnay from Bouchard Ainé & Fils is probably the best value unoaked chardonnay on our shelves today. It offers lovely aromas and flavours of green fruit, especially apple and pear, citric fruit like lemon and even some slight tropical fruit. In addition to making a great aperitif this clean, crisp and refreshing white would also pair wonderfully with most shellfish and mild seafood courses – especially cod and halibut.
Much like the chardonnay, the pinot noir from Bouchard Ainé & Fils also offers incredible value. Fresh and fruity with a hint of oak, this wine showcases enticing aromas and flavors of red fruits like cherry, strawberry, and raspberry. Its vibrant, mouthwatering acidity makes it incredibly food-friendly, pairing effortlessly with pork, chicken, and pasta dishes. Smooth and approachable, it’s an excellent choice for those who think they don’t enjoy red wine—this bottle just might change their mind!
Another great pinot noir from Burgundy is the Latour Pinot Noir. This elegant red by Latour is one of longest standing pinot noirs on our shelves, and for good reason. It offers everything that you would want in a high-quality regional wine and more. Expect ample red fruit on the nose and palate, soft tannins and a crisp acidity. Serve this supple wine with grilled duck breast or meaty red fish like tuna and salmon. It also pairs great with most vegetarian dishes.
Finally, the Louis Latour Villages Marsannay Blanc. 2022 saw the driest, warmest and sunniest year on record in Burgundy. This resulted in wines that were surprisingly typical for the region expressing a lovely purity and freshness. This village-level Burgundy drinks like it is a premier cru. In addition to aromas of green fruit and nuts, time spent in oak barrels has imparted flavours of wood, spice and a touch of smoke. Serve this dry, well-balanced wine to a special someone for an anniversary or birthday.
Burgundy is a special region that offers some truly wonderful wines. Burgundy wines are deeply influenced by their terroir—soil, climate, and topography. The region’s climats, which are small vineyard plots with distinct characteristics, produce wines with remarkable depth and complexity. We encourage you to pick up one of these lovely bottles next time you visit one of our stores. You will not be disappointed!
