Since 2010 we have celebrated International Cabernet Day each year on the Thursday before Labour Day. As the world’s most planted wine grape Cabernet Sauvignon is known to be high in both acid and tannins, with a full-body – making the best examples very age-worthy. Wines made from this variety have aromas and flavours of black fruits and when aged in oak barrels often exhibit additional flavours of cedar and spice. While most might think that this day is dedicated solely to Cabernet Sauvignon, this variety’s parent – Cabernet Franc – also deserves some love. Try your favourite Cabernet this fall with grilled meats and/or aged hard cheeses high in protein like cheddar, Manchego or Parmigiano.
